The Black Diamond Professional Alto Saxophone - Designed by Rheuben Allen - Repairman to the Hollywood Studio & Touring Woodwind Players.
This saxophone is a great example of his ingenuity.
The saxophone has rich, dark, and smooth tone. There were only two in existence that were made from the prototype. We have the prototype in our office. This saxophone is taken by our staff to gigs, practice, and try outs to music teachers. It runs a close second to the fabulous RAAS6L - 14K Alto Sax.
The first one was bought by a collector who doesn't play (go figure)!

The product was introduced at the NAMM show in 2017 and we are excited to be one of the first to take it for a spin. It plays with such a dark, rich, and full tone. The range is amazing and fluid key action..
The body which is 85% copper, and a mixture of brass with brass keys. With a Champagne Lacquer Finish, ribbed construction, newly designed High F-Sharp Trill Key and Harmonic (Front F) keys. The bore design is the same as the G- Series IV Soprano Saxophones, and it does make a difference compared to others.
The Saxophones are unique in design of the G-Series Saxophones, and features - Palm Keys and Upper Stack are a modern traditional design and the lower stack and left hand little finger keys are patterned after the original Mark VI. Of course it a Bb Instrument with a range from Low Bb to a high G. The accessories is outstanding besides the basics with the exception of the value added Kenny G KGSS-HRMp2 Traditional Chamber Mouthpiece, Rovner designed Kenny G Soprano Saxophone Ligature with cap, and a cool looking case..
More impressive with the hand engraving throughout the instrument, the color with the Champagne finish is unbelievable..

]]>They have great intonation, and great response throughout the entire range of the saxophone. Full Body Hand Engraving.
Single Post Construction and the Silver Plated Body are a great combination…. the soprano vibrates very well, with exceptional dynamic range.
We also got our hands on the Kenny G 85% Copper Alto Saxophone (It comes with Two Necks) and a Soprano Saxophone. They are a Professional Model, and comparing them to our shop standard instruments.. (we will not name them) - All we can say is Wow!! - Dark Tone, fast response, very resonating, and they look better in person than the pictures depict..
Coming Soon to the website and you will not be disappointed..

We played other Saxophones from various other manufacturers, and it is amazing that there are just so many of them. Pricing ranging from inexpensive to very high. It came to our conclusion - The inexpensive ones do play, but not easy to blow, tone is dead, and for beginner saxophone players - the drop out must be huge.. The expensive ones played well, great tone, and easy to play.. Alas, unless you are an advance student, then yes get that expensive instrument..
You want to save some $$$, then check out either the Rheuben Allen Saxophone line or the Kenny G Saxophone line. You will not be disappointed.
We saw the Kenny G Saxophone line - 85% Copper Soprano, Alto, & Tenor Saxophones - By they way not being self promoting but it played the best. Rich tone, easy to play, and loved the engraving. Medium Priced compared to similar. I am sure I will see this type next year at the other manufacturers.
All in All it was a great show..

The Most Simple and Effective Tool of its Kind
The ReedGeek® “Universal” Reed Tool was designed to help all woodwind players (both students and professionals), adjust single and double reeds to achieve better reed performance more simply and accurately than any other reed tool on the market today. It has quickly become an industry leader and is used by the world’s top woodwind professionals.
Although simplistic in appearance, the ReedGeek® “Universal” Tool’s machining is anything but… Utilizing state of the art technology, the ReedGeek is cut from virgin raw sheet comprised of the highest-grade proprietary “true” U.S. alloys. It is then heat-treated and machined to tolerances closer than any reed tool available… An 18 step machining process from start to finish! Finally, all ‘Geeks are hand honed and polished by ReedGeek’s founder to enable the most precise and least invasive cut for the reed.
Experience the benefits of a truly flat reed
The ReedGeek® “Universal” Reed Tool enhances reed performance by rapidly and accurately flattening reed tables. Other methods for flattening reed tables, are less effective, take longer and produce less consistent results. Within 10 minutes of training, players will notice a dramatic improvement in efficiency (ease of sound production), sonic quality and responsiveness in their reeds. Users of the tool will find more “good” reeds in a box and the reeds will perform longer and more consistently over their lifetime. In effect, the tool more than pays for itself soon after purchase!
The two main reasons for poorly performing reeds are:
Most commercial reeds will have or develop lateral warp of the reed table either from the factory or when the reed comes in contact with moisture. In this defective state, the reed will not seal correctly along the critical area of the mouthpiece. This area extends along the mouthpiece’s side rails to just below where the mouthpiece window and table meet. When the ReedGeek is properly used in daily reed maintenance and reed preparation, the reed and mouthpiece will perform much more cohesively as a unit. This unit will have the reed positioned snugly against the mouthpieces’ table, side and tip rails creating a temporary vacuum. It is this vacuum and subsequent release (pop) that maximizes the vibration and response of both the reed and mouthpiece, contributing to improved tone quality, articulation, and control.

]]>The Saxophone Family
The saxophone family consists of nine different instruments, although only four are commonly played. The following sections describe the most common saxophones from the soprano sax to the baritone sax.
Soprano Saxophones
The Soprano Saxophone consists of the smallest members of the saxophone family. There are three main versions of the soprano saxophone, and they are mainly of straight designs as opposed to the common image of curved saxophones. The soprano is one of the hardest types of saxophones to learn how to play properly, so it is not recommended for beginners. It is used most commonly in Jazz applications due to its higher pitch.
Alto Saxophones
The Alto Saxophone is larger than the soprano and is considered a medium-sized saxophone. It is the most commonly played type of saxophone because of its size and ease of use. It is the easiest of all the saxophones to learn how to play. It has a small mouthpiece, which limits the amount of intonation the musician can apply to the sound, making it more consistent. It is mainly designed with the classic saxophone curve at the bottom of the instrument, but they can be designed as straight or having only a slight curve. Altos are used is classical music compositions but can also be applied to jazz and contemporary music as well.
Tenor Saxophones
The Tenor Saxophone is slightly larger than the alto and is still considered medium-sized. It, along with the alto saxophone are the most common type of saxophone due to their size and ease of use. The mouthpiece on the tenor saxophone is larger than that on the alto, making it more suitable for more skilled musicians who can take advantage of the additional intonation characteristics of its size. The tenor saxophone is almost always a classic curved design and it is known as the most versatile of all the saxophone family. It is used extensively in jazz, but is also popular in rock and classical applications as well.
Baritone Saxophones
The Baritone Saxophone or just known as the "Bari" is the largest of the regular family of saxophones. Its size and weight make it the least commonly used of the regular saxophones. It is difficult for musicians to produce proper intonations through it, so it is not a good beginner saxophone. It does have a deep and rich tone which still makes it popular for many different music genres.

]]>Should I buy or should I rent? This is a question for many parents, when their child wants to start playing a musical instrument. These days you can own a flute, clarinet or saxophone for what you would pay if you rented one. A thing to remember is that if a student starts out with an instrument that does not play well out the case; they are not going to enjoy learning how to play. No instrument is a bargain if it does not play correctly. Therefore, if you decide to buy instead of rent, check with us or a reputable dealer.
We at KDI Music understand this as a parent and a music teacher. It is very frustrating to us as teachers, when a student comes in with an instrument that is not playable. We bring in Demo instruments to let the Child try it out, and explain to the Parents, if you are renting and the instrument is not playing well take it back to the rental store.
Send us an e-mail at 4inquiries.kdimusic@gmail.com, we will be glad to help you, even if you do not purchase from us.

Soprano Sax needs a little firmer embouchure to play it well. Not tight so it does not respond but firm mostly for the upper register response.
For example when you first play the high notes just pushing the key does not mean the note will come in.. a slight adjustment to the embouchure is necessary.
Also the biggest mistake most players make when trying to play Soprano Sax is they do not push the mouthpiece far enough on the neck cork. If the mouthpiece is out a little too far then the bottom of the Soprano Sax and sometimes the high notes will not work.
Pushing the mouthpiece in helps on most saxophones for the response. Find what is called the “Sweet Spot” where everything works.
Remember to Practice as often as you can to achieve the intonation you desire.
We Hope This Helps!!

When Rheuben Allen started to create the design for the Black Diamond Series Saxophones he wanted a saxophone that a live player could use. Mostly that all clubs, weddings, concerts and generally most live performances are not held in the same location and all rooms are different acoustically.
The saxophonist must adjust to the location and room size. So the qualities of the Black Nickel Plating came to mind. He still makes saxophones with Black Nickel Bodies and Silver Plating and had made a few with Gold Lacquered keys. They play very nice and are very strong. He wondered what the saxophone would sound like with all Black Nickel Plating so he made a couple Prototypes and was very happy with the results.
They did everything he had hoped. Black Nickel is very durable plating and adds a little weight to the instruments providing the saxophonist with a greater projection of sound.
Black Nickel Plating does not start producing the tone as fast as Lacquer or Silver Plating but can be pushed to produce a very strong projection of tone.
This line represents Lacquer and Silver plating tone projection:
Soft__________________________________________ Loud
This line represents Black Nickel tone projection:
Soft__________________________________________________ Loud
*As you can see the Black Nickel can be pushed to a louder volume, and will depend a lot of the tone production belongs to the player, mouthpiece and reed combination.

To that end, we believe in providing quality instruments on our site for the beginning student to professional musicians. We at KDI Music have tested all the instruments we sell on our website and have even purchased many for our own performance use. I have personally purchased the Kenny G G-Series IV Soprano Sax Silver Body/Lacquered Keys for its tone value and looks. Our Staff has collectively purchased and performs with the Kenny G G-Series IV Alto and Soprano Saxes, E-Series IV Alto and Soprano Saxes, Black Diamond Alto Sax and the Rheuben Allen Series 5 Alto Saxophone.
We have both loaned and sold instruments to many organizations including the Nisei Week Foundation Marching Band and schools. We look forward to helping students experience the Marching Band, Concert Band or Orchestra in their schools, so please reach out to us to see if we can help.
